Scotch Egg and Beer Tasting at Seasons Cafe, St Johns

DSCN0011

Having never been to a Scotch Egg tasting in my life and having done my dissertation on real ale for my degree ( I had to have some excuse),  I thought I’d give this wacky night out a go. At £12.50 for the whole evening I thought it was a bit of a bargain.

On arrival at Seasons Café in St Johns, the table was beautifully laid out with a cutting board and knife and a small tumbler for the beer. There were five scotch eggs to taste made by the Scotch Egg company and 5 beers from the Little Beer Corp in Surrey. We sat on the long table in the middle and were soon joined by three other couples and a 4-year-old ( he didn’t have any beer). This was very social and meant we could discuss each ’round’ with our fellow tasters.

First up was the Classic Mac with a beer called 1917, at 7.4% it was quite strong, but seemed to get the evening off with a good kick! The Classic Mac was also a delicious scotch egg, just like you would expect it to taste but better.

Victoria our hostess , introduced each ’round’ of tasting and explained why each Scotch Egg was coupled with a certain Beer.

Next was the Morgan Scotch egg with fresh chives and mature goats cheese with Chase the Sun a raspberry flavoured beer. The Scotch Egg went down well with a couple of the ladies and the beer was probably a bit too alternative for the men but I quite liked it, it had a nice blush colour ………

Hetty was our nutty egg, with all sorts of nuts, beans and carrots mixed up with a dram of whisky this was coupled with Little Snug, a pale ale that seemed to get the thumbs up from everyone. The best comment about the egg, which was a little bit like a nut roast, was that each mouthful tasted different….. in good way.

By this point number 1 beer, 1917, had hit the blood stream and people were now getting much chattier and freer with their opinions, the conversation had strayed off the food and beer and we were well in to cycling, Mexico and Woking Palace, quite a combination.

Brunch was the next scotch egg with apple and lumps of Stilton, quite a strong taste, this one, but it went down well with the men with two of them declaring it their favourite. The beer was Little Figaro ” the first fig beer that has ever been made commercially in Britain”. Hmmm have to say this was very malty and may be the last Fig beer that’s made commercially, but we may not be representative of the whole population so if you like something “Strooong” then definitely worth tasting.

The finale was a vegetarian Scotch egg made with Chick peas and sundried tomatoes washed down with Posh Grog, the last beer. I have to say the Posh Grog was defo my favourite. A “light super-refreshing wheat beer” which went down very nicely. Quite a few people keen to finish the bottle off at the end of the session!!

We decided to do a quick round up of the scores and voted Classic Mac, Hetty ( the nutty one) and Brunch ( apple and Stilton) the joint winners of the Scotch Egg tasting with Little Snug the pale ale a clear winner in the Beer stakes.

It was a great evening, well organised, sociable ( there were a few swappings of emails at the end) and great fun.
